We run courses 52 weeks a year from our light and airy classroom with stunning views over Plymouth Sound.

Accommodation available for intensive courses.

This course is for those aspiring to blue water cruising and is ideal for holders of the Yachtmaster Offshore certificate who are preparing for their first ocean passage.

Topics covered include:

The earth and the celestial sphere
Practical guide to use and care of sextant at sea
Meridian altitudes
Sun, star and other sights
Ocean passage planning

Prior to the course your navigation skills should be at the standard of the Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore shorebased course.

If you are working towards your Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence, completion of this shorebased course exempts you from the written exam.

The course is taught over 40 hours with one exam paper. It can be covered as two short sessions, or as an intensive 5 day course. Includes time taking practical sights on board our Moody 40.

The basis of our navigational courses is student focus with lots of hands on in the classroom practice navigating and completing exercises using the charts. Our radio courses include practice radios that allow students to make emergency mayday and routine safety calls within the confines of the classroom.

Studying with Start Point Sailing in our dedicated classroom overlooking Plymouth Sound gives you the added bonus of being able to see for real, the marine buoyage system, lights and shapes and on the water movement of both commercial and leisure craft on the water.
