DAY SKIPPER SHOREBASED
 FORMATS: Evening 16 week, 5 day intensive, weekends,
or 4 days theory as part of the 9 day practical/shorebased combined course
The basis of our course
is student focus with lots of hands on practice navigating and completing exercises
using the charts and is aimed to be a social class. The Day Skipper is a
must! It starts from scratch with navigation, weather, safety and is suitable
for both experienced sailors who want to brush up, or fill in the gaps in
their basic knowledge and for those new to boating and planning to take a
boat on the water, especially if you are responsible for other people.
Assessment takes the form of 2 assessment papers for the Day Skipper
shorebased, a navigational paper and a general paper.
Course topics include:
• the basics of seamanship
• the essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage
• chartwork
• electronic charts
• position fixing
• plotting a course to steer
• weather forecasting and meteorology
• tides
• collision regulations
• construction, parts and equipment of a cruising boat
• emergency and safety procedures including distress calls,use of
flares, safety harnesses, lifejackets
and
