SUMMER 2005 NEWSLETTER

START POINT SAILING is celebrating 10 years

We offer clean and fully DoT coded yachts, customer service and professional instructors.

Contratulations to all our students who have become Day Skippers this year!

NEW WEEKEND DAY SKIPPER SHOREBASED DATES
FROM DARTMOUTH

Move on from your Competent Crew stage or use these shorebased weekends as a navigation skills brush up. 2 weekends shorebased followed closely by a 5 day Day Skipper Practical will aim to give you both your shorebased and practical Day Skipper certificates or go Sat to Sunday for the 9 dayer Day Skipper combined course. VHF Radio with DSC GMDSS and First Aid for the yachtsman courses are running monthly (pre-requisites for the DoT Yachmaster exam).

We offer a full RYA cruising programme both shorebased and practical from Dartmouth. Whether your are considering sailing as a new hobby, have just completed your Day Skipper shorebased course at college or are preparing for your Yachtmaster exam we would be glad to hear from you. Give us a call for a friendly chat and information on how you can achieve your sailing goals in 2005.

GETTING IN YOUR SAILING PRACTICE

Sailing does not have to consist of just RYA courses, as good as they are for putting those skills in place, getting some sailing practice in outside the scheme is just as important.

We also have a number of dates set aside for skippered milebuilding cross channel trips including night sailing, crossing the shipping lane and at least 1 60 mile passage. These trips go to the challenging Channel Islands and French ports.

We also have relaxed but fun sailing and racing weekends and weeks also in the UK and France from £80 per day

If you and your friends have just completed your Day Skipper, then our GK29 is available for bareboat charter from £350 for the weekend. Coastal Skippers can take advantage of our wider charter fleet. Take a look at our calendar for some dates or check out the fleet page for details.

TAKE A LOOK AT OUR ONLINE CALENDAR - THE FASTNET RACE qualifying dates and Race dates and prices are up for 2005. Other race dates not yet up include Plymouth to St Peter Port Race, Plymouth to Morlaix, £225 per person , Torbay and Dartmouth regatta £200 per person.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE DAY SKIPPER CERTIFICATE

The Day Skipper qualification is of great importance if you are planning to skipper a yacht or buy one of your own. The skills obtained on the shorebased alone can make the difference between you being safe on the water or heading towards trouble. The course covers the fundamental skills such as the buoyage system, navigation, boat equipment and safety and anti-collision regulations. Your Day Skipper Practical certificate also automatically qualifies you for the ICC (International Certificate of competence). Forms for the ICC can be downloaded from the RYA website.
Shorebased Day Skipper classes are run at many night schools throughout the winter. We run weekend, 5 and 9 day intensive courses covering both the practical and shorebased elements of Day Skipper.

We run a 9 dayer which has been a big hit this season running from Sat to Sun and only taking up a week of your holiday leave. Come and join us for mix of 4 days in the classroom running from Dartmouth Yacht Club and 5 days of that all good practical experience give you instant reinforcement and confidence that your new skills work. We are also running some weekend shorebased Day Skipper dates, navigation refresher courses and GMDSS VHF Radio licence courses.
If you would like to know more about Day Skipper then we will be glad to talk to you in the office. Give us a call or email us at startpoint@sail-west.co.uk or click on the contact button (left).

Andrew, Bob, Andy and I wish you Good Sailing and fun for 2005.
